Espresso then.

[sips on his wine, but pauses mid-sip.]

...I actually don't remember how far back espresso was invented.

Yeah, it sounds like somewhere far in the past compared to where my world is now.

[He says that with a touch of nostalgia. "Far in the past" was likely his childhood, given he was born in the 800s.]

[His answer is an honest one.]

I remember people more than innovations. A reckless prince who insisted on befriending me despite my protests, a gruff general who gave every cent he had to house the poor and ill, a circus performer who kept the conversation lively, a priest who stood by his convictions even when challenged by the smartest minds in the country, a sly thief who would extend a helping hand while sneaking your coins out of your pocket...Most have been gone for centuries, but even now it feels like they've just stepped out for the night and they'll be back in the morning.

[People are the reason he took up his work, and people are the reason he ended up in heaven in the first place.]

It's those connections that make us who we are. A lot of my favorite things come from people who have already come and gone. My fondness of wine comes from that prince, for example. He was the one to introduce me to it.

[He seems happy to be reflecting on positive memories, but after a moment his smile drops.]

I had been kind of hoping to see them here, any one of them would have been a nice surprise. But I guess that wasn't meant to be.

[Sister, huh...]

There were six of us in my family. Five older sisters, and then me. Three have already gone on already, all passed some time ago. I wonder... what would they think if they saw their little brother here?

[The average clutch of dragon eggs is 4 to 7 so.]

...

[He's trying to think of them saying anything nice but is failing to come up with anything.]

I was always smaller and weaker than them so they would push me around and make me do their chores!

[Yeah, that bad.]

Absolutely terrifying.

[He drinks to that!]

Though my daughter is normal to her little brother at least. She hasn't inherited any of the bullying.

Yes, two of them. Ava and Chance.

[He looks so proud.]

[Chance is a sweet boy, not a stick in the mud.]

Well. I didn't have the best role models. My father was never in the picture and my mother died when I had just become an adult. But I like to think they were proud of me.

[He was the one who chased away the nightmares and made sure they knew that someone would always be there to catch them if they stumbled.]

They did have two fathers too, since Concord and I both raised them. Between the two of us, I think we got things right.

[Instead of answering directly, he'll go about it in a different way.]

I never thought I was one for settling down. I was perfectly happy spending my time doing whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I may not look like it now, but I used to be quite the troublemaker.

But Concord...he changed me. He was stubborn to a fault and I could never talk him out of whatever silly ideas he got in his head. He was never good at making educated decisions either, he would just rush into danger once he heard of the trouble. But despite that, he was the ideal image of altruism. Every cent he earned went to those who needed it more. He would give you the shirt off of his back if you asked. Hell, he gave his blood to a vampire once because, in his words, "I have so much of it, I can spare some."

[He makes his voice a bit deeper at the end, as if to mimic Concord's voice. But then he sighs and drops back to his usual voice.]

I don't know what he ever saw in someone like me, but...I'm glad for it. Just being around him made me want to be better. It still makes me want to be better.

[He has long since given up on denying how gay he is. Even before Concord he always had a thing for big, burly men.]

I'm sure I'll hear all about it once I make it back. He's never been shy about expressing his feelings. Though I guess that's normal for a unicorn.

[This is so funny.]

What, think unicorns are pure creatures who frolic through fields and can only be seen by maidens?
