Do you miss it? The things that eventually fade away, that is. You must have seen far more change than the average sod, but so many innovations at the same time.
I remember people more than innovations. A reckless prince who insisted on befriending me despite my protests, a gruff general who gave every cent he had to house the poor and ill, a circus performer who kept the conversation lively, a priest who stood by his convictions even when challenged by the smartest minds in the country, a sly thief who would extend a helping hand while sneaking your coins out of your pocket...Most have been gone for centuries, but even now it feels like they've just stepped out for the night and they'll be back in the morning.
[People are the reason he took up his work, and people are the reason he ended up in heaven in the first place.]
Aye, that sounds right. The friends and companions I've made over the years are what hold my heart far more than the lands do. I suppose it's good to know even those who see time pass for far longer have similar thoughts.
It's those connections that make us who we are. A lot of my favorite things come from people who have already come and gone. My fondness of wine comes from that prince, for example. He was the one to introduce me to it.
[He seems happy to be reflecting on positive memories, but after a moment his smile drops.]
I had been kind of hoping to see them here, any one of them would have been a nice surprise. But I guess that wasn't meant to be.
Somehow it's always the ones you don't expect. Maker knows I would have loved to see my sister again but... Perhaps it's better knowing that she's gone on ahead than ended up in whatever nonsense we've found ourselves in. I'm sure it's the same for you.
There were six of us in my family. Five older sisters, and then me. Three have already gone on already, all passed some time ago. I wonder... what would they think if they saw their little brother here?
Well. I didn't have the best role models. My father was never in the picture and my mother died when I had just become an adult. But I like to think they were proud of me.
[He was the one who chased away the nightmares and made sure they knew that someone would always be there to catch them if they stumbled.]
They did have two fathers too, since Concord and I both raised them. Between the two of us, I think we got things right.
[Instead of answering directly, he'll go about it in a different way.]
I never thought I was one for settling down. I was perfectly happy spending my time doing whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I may not look like it now, but I used to be quite the troublemaker.
But Concord...he changed me. He was stubborn to a fault and I could never talk him out of whatever silly ideas he got in his head. He was never good at making educated decisions either, he would just rush into danger once he heard of the trouble. But despite that, he was the ideal image of altruism. Every cent he earned went to those who needed it more. He would give you the shirt off of his back if you asked. Hell, he gave his blood to a vampire once because, in his words, "I have so much of it, I can spare some."
[He makes his voice a bit deeper at the end, as if to mimic Concord's voice. But then he sighs and drops back to his usual voice.]
I don't know what he ever saw in someone like me, but...I'm glad for it. Just being around him made me want to be better. It still makes me want to be better.

You know, in my world we just drink coffee as a hangover cure.

Somehow, I fear we'd need something far more potent than coffee to deal with a single round of rot gut.

[sips on his wine, but pauses mid-sip.]
...I actually don't remember how far back espresso was invented.

You'd have better luck finding a cup of grog than anything more fancier than a simple black coffee in Ferelden, quite honestly.

[He says that with a touch of nostalgia. "Far in the past" was likely his childhood, given he was born in the 800s.]

And here I thought I had my hands full with a set of twins.
Knowing Carver, he'd have nothing kind to say about it being me. Here's hoping yours are nicer than that.

...
[He's trying to think of them saying anything nice but is failing to come up with anything.]

......... That bad, huh?
no subject
[Yeah, that bad.]

Sisters are terrifying.

[He drinks to that!]
Though my daughter is normal to her little brother at least. She hasn't inherited any of the bullying.

You've children?!

[He looks so proud.]

Maker. Who would have thought? At least those two must be proud of their Father.

Sounds like you did what you could for them. That's the best you can do, in my opinion.
Is Concord....?

but look at him smile a little soppily because it makes him think of certain people ]
Sounds like you've got a good person to depend on. I'm sure as much as you care for him, he thinks the same for you.

I'm sure I'll hear all about it once I make it back. He's never been shy about expressing his feelings. Though I guess that's normal for a unicorn.
